Viking operates ships with a very easy-to-understand array of cabins, unlike some of its competitors. The latter has doors that open onto simple balustrades and not full balconies that you can step onto. This feature is known as a French balcony or Juliet balcony (a nod to the balcony of this type made famous in Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet").

Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. Plus, in many cases, we’re going to bring you complimentary VIP amenities through our affiliation with Virtuoso®, the world’s leading international luxury travel agency network, that you won’t get on your own. As you can see, the number of suites is quite limited, so if you prefer a larger suite, early booking is highly recommended. You'll have to pay for gratuities, as well as transfers if you did not book your flight through Viking. Bring or exchange small amounts of local currency to tip local guides and bus drivers.

There were only two days where we sailed during the day; when we sailed through the middle Rhine and when we sailed 300km from Cologne to Kinderdiik. During the rest of the cruise we were off the ship doing shore excursions during the day.
On Emerald's Star Ships, the bedroom is separated from the living room with a sliding door in the one-bedroom Owners Suite. Uniworld's Super Ships each have a 401-square-foot Royal Suite with a separate living area; the suites themselves are only one room (although they're fairly spacious at 305 square feet). The line's other ships do not have separate living and sleeping areas in any cabins. On its Longships, Viking has a wide selection of balcony cabins, or Veranda Staterooms, where there's space for a table and chair. A-Rosa, Amadeus River Cruises and AmaWaterways are among the lines that also offer balcony cabins. Viking river cruise ship layouts center on the glass-enclosed Aquavit Terrace.

The pseudo-balconies do the trick of making the cabins feel larger than they actually are. We opted to book through our travel agent with whom we could meet face-to-face, ask questions, and learn from her knowledge of cruising and different cruise companies. Plus, some travel agents provide onboard credit to cruising clients.
The ships are designed for this — to have travelers walk through the common spaces. And our experience was that we were usually parked next to other Viking ships, so we walked through familiar spaces. On all river cruises, guests are offered one complimentary shore excursion at every destination. In addition, quite a few “optional” excursions are available at an extra cost.

What About Accessible Cabins on River Cruise Ships?
The one exception was the program director, who made the move with us. We had grown to like the crew on the Skirnir, but we quickly came to like the new ones as well. There was a broken lock near Regensburg, about halfway between the two big cities.
AmaWaterways has twin balcony staterooms, which combine a French balcony off the living area and an outdoor balcony where you can step out off the bedroom. There are some exceptions to this in Viking's fleet, primarily on Portugal's Douro River, Germany's Elbe River and the Seine River in France. On those rivers, Viking uses smaller ships to navigate locks and have access to buzzing city centers, like Paris. While these "baby Longships," as the company calls them, may be smaller, they have similar amenities, restaurants and cabin choices. It’s important to note that when the ship docks somewhere in the morning and you go on an excursion, you sometimes will be brought back to the ship in a different location — like another city further down the river.
Plus, Viking offers several excursions each day that the ship is in port. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our Viking River cruise, which transported us comfortably to some amazing European destinations. Viking also offers smaller versions of its Longships that have fewer balcony cabins, as well as a few different types of river ships with varying numbers of balcony cabins.
There is an extra charge for the Silver Spirits package for guests who want to enjoy premium wines and beer, cocktails, and champagnes. The bottom line is that you'll be much less flummoxed when trying to choose the perfect cabin for you on a Viking ocean ship than when trying to choose a cabin on most other vessels. Part of the data is collected to ensure the proper functioning of the website. Access each deck and individual areas in the menu tray located on the right of the screen, and click or tap to view. Design-wise, Viking's cabins are relatively upscale, with soothing, Scandinavian-influenced decor and lots of luxury touches like heated floors in bathrooms. In addition to a bed area, Penthouse Junior Suites have a large sitting area with a sofa, coffee table and chairs, and a separate television. In a similar nod to functionality and ease of use, Viking had the remote controls for cabin televisions specially designed so they would only have a few buttons.
Every cabin comes with a view on Viking's Longships; there isn't a single interior cabin to be found onboard. As you leave the ship, you’ll scan your room key to indicate your departure and rescan it upon returning. You can sign up for excursions from your account on MyVikingJourney.com prior to your trip. Sometimes optional excursions sell out, although there are usually some available once you’re on the ship. Please note that Viking requires at least 48 hours’ cancellation notice if you are on the ship and decide not to go on an optional excursion.
